Former political prisoner Olga Skrashchuk congratulated Belarusian teachers on their professional holiday and recalled the teachers with whom she shared a prison cell in Zhodino
“Teachers’ Day was celebrated in Belarus,” she writes. “I, too, want to congratulate teachers and remember them.
Four female teachers were imprisoned with me in the ‘Zeltser case’: an English teacher with an international diploma, an art teacher, a music teacher, and a distinguished teacher of Russian and Belarusian languages and literature—she was 71 years old. One was brought to Zhodino in chains, under escort.
The 71-year-old teacher became so ill that she couldn’t even get up from the cot in her cell. They wouldn’t give her any medicine. Guards would come in, laugh, and ask if she had died yet. Then they’d leave.
At 71 years old, they made her squat with her hands clasped behind her back; she fell and burst into tears. They also said that we would be shot. And these teachers, too.

Belarusians expressed confidence that the country’s leadership will change and that those who tortured political prisoners will be punished. The website Charter97.org cites some comments:
— Good always triumphs over evil; its time will come to an end, as will the time of its “friend.” Right now, I’d like to join you in your congratulations.
— In 2020, teachers exposed the fraud and revealed the real election results. They were mostly counting votes on the election commissions. That’s why I don’t hold a grudge against them; I know they’re surviving as best they can.
— The government will change, and the fascists will face the Minsk Tribunal.
