The U.S. Will Consider The Possibility Of Establishing A Military Base In Lithuania

President Donald Trump confirmed the information.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he would consider establishing a military base in Lithuania. He made this statement while answering a question from a journalist from the Lithuanian publication LRT in Washington.

“We will definitely consider it. I know a great many people in Lithuania. They’re wonderful people,” Donald Trump replied.

Shortly before that, Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius told Bloomberg that the country is ready to cover the costs associated with the permanent stationing of U.S. military personnel, and would welcome the possibility of establishing a U.S. military base in Lithuania.

Since 2014, varying numbers of U.S. troops have been rotated through Lithuania intermittently. This summer, as the U.S. was reviewing its military presence in Europe, just over 100 U.S. service members remained in the country; however, it was announced in September that two battalions would arrive in Lithuania by the end of October. This roughly corresponds to the size of the U.S. contingent in recent years—more than a thousand service members.

As a reminder, Trump had previously stated that significant progress had been made on the issue of establishing a new U.S. Army base in Poland.
