The embassy in Moscow issued an official warning.

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow has issued an official warning regarding a suspected pneumonic plague in the Irkutsk Region. Americans were reminded that they should leave Russia immediately.

This was reported by the website of the U.S. Embassy in Russia.

The diplomatic mission is monitoring reports from the Irkutsk region regarding a probable case of pneumonic plague, a death, quarantine measures, and hospital closures.

At the same time, the embassy acknowledges that its ability to assist Americans in Russia is limited, especially outside of Moscow. U.S. government employees may face additional restrictions on travel to certain regions due to health and safety risks.

Those in the region are advised to follow the instructions of local medical professionals, avoid facilities under quarantine, and seek immediate medical attention if they develop a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Those who have recently visited the outbreak area should monitor their health for 14 days. The Embassy also advises checking with your insurance provider regarding the possibility of medical evacuation and an exit plan that does not rely on assistance from the U.S. government.

The State Department continues to maintain the highest, Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Russia. Americans currently in the country are advised to leave immediately due to the risk of unlawful detention and security threats.

A case of plague occurred in the Irkutsk region in early October. On the night of October 2, a 28-year-old lab technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute died at the Shelekhov Hospital; according to local media, she had broken a test tube containing the pathogen that causes pneumonic plague a week earlier. About 200 people who had come into contact with her were quarantined, but regional authorities have not yet officially disclosed the diagnosis.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is aware of the situation and promised to assist Russia. According to him, the pathogens have become stronger, “like an army,” which is why medications that were previously effective are now less effective.
