The EU Is Preparing A "special" Roadmap For Ukraine's Accession

It will be unveiled later this month.

The European Union is preparing indicative roadmaps for four candidate countries—Montenegro, Albania, Moldova, and Ukraine. However, Ukraine’s roadmap will differ from the others.

This was stated by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, as reported by “Suspilne”.

It is noted that the roadmaps are scheduled to be presented as early as October 28.

“We are preparing roadmaps for the four most advanced candidate countries. We have identified four leaders: Montenegro, Albania, Moldova, and Ukraine. In recent years, these countries have demonstrated significant progress in terms of readiness,” says Kos.

According to her, the EU aims to help these candidate countries maintain the pace of reforms. Therefore, the roadmaps will set out indicative timelines and specific tasks that must be completed.

“This will provide us with greater predictability regarding accession. It is important that this path continues to be based on the individual achievements of the candidate countries,” the European Commissioner said.

At the same time, Kos noted that the situation in Ukraine differs significantly from that of these countries due to the war. Therefore, work on the Ukrainian roadmap continues, and it “will be somewhat different.”

The European Commissioner says that many steps have already been taken regarding Ukraine within the framework of technical negotiations. These include opening clusters, then meeting milestones, and subsequently closing chapters.

“Therefore, it will be easier to determine exactly how the entire situation (the war—ed.) will be reflected in the terms of the accession treaty, what that will look like. I hope the war in Ukraine will end soon. I truly wish for that,” Kos noted.

She added that Ukraine is currently working on three fronts simultaneously:

the struggle for survival,

the integration process and compliance with EU requirements,

and the implementation of reforms.
