The billionaire spent $160 million but was unable to save the Republicans in Texas.
The Democrats scored a historic victory in Texas, winning the gubernatorial and Senate races and shaking the Republicans’ hold on one of their key strongholds. Gina Inohosa will become the state’s first Democratic governor since Ann Richards, and James Talarico — the first Democrat from Texas to serve in the Senate since 1988. The results dealt a serious blow to Donald Trump’s party, according to The New York Times.
Back in 2024, Trump won Texas by a margin of nearly 14 percent. This time, however, the Democrats fielded candidates in every county in the state and ran a coordinated campaign. The victories of Hinojosa and Talarico were accompanied by successes for their party colleagues in other elections.
Even massive financial injections did not help the Republicans. Elon Musk spent more than $160 million to support Republican Senator Ken Paxton, but he lost to Talarico. Ads created using artificial intelligence that mocked the Democrat’s views were also launched against him.
In his campaign, Talarico spoke out against the excessive influence of billionaires on American politics. “The people at the top—Elon Musk, Rupert Murdoch, Mark Zuckerberg—spend so much energy trying to make us angry and turn us against one another because our unity threatens their wealth and power,” he said.
Inohosa also criticized Republican Governor Greg Abbott for supporting large tech companies and building data centers at the expense of local residents’ interests.
Democratic victories in Texas, Kansas, Ohio, and South Carolina highlighted the scale of the Republicans’ defeat and weakened Trump’s political standing.
