And return to Reagan's legacy.

The moderate Republican group Our Republican Legacy has called on the party to abandon the MAGA ("Make America Great Again") movement, according to Fox News.

The group was founded by conservative Missouri Senator and former U.S. Ambassador to the UN Jack Danforth, and is led by former Secretary of Defense William Cohen. The statement was released following the Republicans’ “crushing defeat” in the midterm elections.

“The Republican Party has suffered a crushing defeat. The American people have delivered their verdict on the MAGA movement, the ‘America First’ slogan, and the policies of the current administration and the Republican-controlled Congress,” the statement from Our Republican Legacy reads.

According to representatives of the group, in order to regain a majority in Congress and hold onto the White House in 2028, the party must “distance itself” from President Donald Trump.

“Donald Trump will never again lead the Republican Party in a general election. It is time to begin a discussion about the future of a principled Republican Party in the post-Trump era,” the organization emphasized.

The goal of Our Republican Legacy is to nominate a presidential candidate from the party’s traditional wing and ensure his victory. “When candidates announce their candidacies and launch their presidential campaigns, we will look for opportunities to support one or more leaders who share our party’s traditional core principles,” the group added.

According to the organization’s executive director, Chris Vance, the 2028 campaign “is already underway,” and soon “an open battle for control of the Republican Party will unfold.”

“Our goal is to help nominate a Republican presidential candidate committed to the legacy of Ronald Reagan and ensure his election in 2028,” he said.
