The EU commented on the results of the U.S. congressional elections.
Kristel Schaldemose, Vice President of the European Parliament, expressed cautious optimism regarding the implications of the U.S. congressional elections for Europe and support for Ukraine.
She wrote about this on her social media page X on Wednesday, November 4.
Schaldemose called the results of the midterm elections in the United States “incredible.”
“I view Europe’s future with cautious optimism. Not because everything will now change for the better, but because this could help support Ukraine, the ‘green’ transition, and relations with the outside world,” noted the Vice President of the European Parliament.
However, she emphasized that, despite these results, the EU must continue to pursue a course aimed at strengthening its position and autonomy.
According to Associated Press projections, the Democratic Party won the U.S. midterm congressional elections and will control both chambers of Congress, where Republicans previously held the majority. Preliminary data indicates that Democrats will secure at least 54 of the 100 seats in the Senate and at least 228 of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives. Vote counting is still underway.
