The human rights activist plans to allocate part of the funds to his new project.

Director and founder of the “Viasna” Human Rights Center, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former political prisoner Ales Beliatski has not yet accessed the funds from the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize (amounting to approximately 300,000 euros): he does not have a bank account, and it is not easy for a Belarusian émigré to open one.

The human rights activist spoke about this in an interview with Deutsche Welle, adding that he faces the same difficulties as many of his compatriots abroad.

He intends to allocate part of the funds to a new project. Under the auspices of his foundation, an award will be established for young people from Belarus, other countries in Eastern Europe, and Central Asia where human rights are violated. The plan is to present it annually to support those who cannot realize their potential in their home countries.

Belyatsky will set aside another portion of the money to get settled. According to him, he was expelled from the country without any funds, so he needs to figure out how to get his life back on track.

When asked by journalist Alexandra Boguslavskaya whether he planned to buy a car, Belyatsky replied that he does not have a driver’s license and is not considering a purchase

The human rights activist was released in December 2025 as part of a mass release of political prisoners.
