The NYT: 50,000 U.S. Military Personnel Awaiting Orders
Donald Trump

An operation against Iran could begin soon.

US President Donald Trump has dispatched about 50,000 US military personnel to take part in an operation against Iran. Aircraft carriers, destroyers, Marine units and combat aviation have been deployed to the region. The troops, equipped with parachutes and survival kits, were part of Trump's declared mission to "destroy Iran's missiles and dismantle its missile industry."

As The New York Times writes, U.S. forces remain on high alert, while there are conflicting signals from the White House about the future course of the military campaign. For example, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the end of Operation Epic Fury. At the same time, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said that the main efforts were focused on escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz, although Trump later clarified that these actions, too, had been temporarily halted.

The US leader later said he was ready to end the war and ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz if Iran "agrees to previously reached terms" without revealing details of the arrangements. At the same time, he warned: "If they don't agree, the bombing will begin."

According to the publication, the US Navy continues to block shipping to and from Iranian ports after Tehran effectively closed the strait. On Wednesday, a U.S. warplane stopped an Iranian-flagged oil tanker that was trying to break the blockade.

Before the conflict escalated in February, some 40,000 U.S. troops were stationed at U.S. bases and ships in the Middle East - in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE and Kuwait. However, as the military campaign intensified, their number exceeded 50,000.

The exact number of U.S. forces in the region remains unknown, as after Iran's retaliatory strikes on U.S. bases, some units were transferred to other sites - both in the Middle East, Europe and on the territory of the United States itself.

At least two thousand troops of the elite 82nd Airborne Division are among the units still in the region. The Pentagon does not specify their exact location.
