A Drone Strike On An Air Navigation Building Paralyzed 13 Airports In Southern Russia

There was chaos in air travel.

The work of 13 airports in Russia has been temporarily suspended after Ukrainian drones hit the building of the Aeronavigatsiya Yuga Rossii branch in Rostov-on-Don, the Russian Transport Ministry has said. In particular, the air hubs of Astrakhan, Vladikavkaz, Volgograd, Gelendzhik, Grozny, Krasnodar, Makhachkala, Magas, Mineralnye Vody, Nalchik, Sochi, Stavropol and Elista stopped receiving and dispatching aircraft. "The performance of the equipment is being analyzed. In this regard, air traffic control technologies in the south of Russia are being adjusted," the ministry said. It also added that together with Rosaviatsia, airlines and airports are changing the schedule. The Ministry of Transport promised to provide information about further work of air hubs later, reports The Moscow Times.

"Aeroflot" said that due to the situation "is forced to adjust the schedule by postponing departure times, as well as canceling some flights." Norwind, Russia and Pobeda said the same. The Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) specified that as of 10:00 (Minsk time), more than 80 flights were delayed and canceled in the southern airports of Russia, while at least 14 thousand passengers are waiting for departure. On the night of May 8, due to the attack of drones, flight restrictions were also imposed at the airports of Perm, Sochi, Ufa, Izhevsk, Bugulma, Nizhnekamsk, Kazan, Cheboksary, Samara and Ulyanovsk. In Moscow, Vnukovo airport suspended work, while in Domodedovo the reception and release of flights was carried out by agreement.

The day before, due to drone attacks, Moscow airports were hit by the strongest collapse since the beginning of the year. In total, more than 450 flights were delayed or canceled. On Tuesday, May 5, more than 500 flights did not depart on time. Thus, Moscow airports came close to the situation of July 2025, when within three days with delays and cancellations faced passengers of 1000 flights - about 200 thousand people.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation stated that in total for the past night over the regions of Russia was destroyed 390 drones and 6 guided missiles of long range "Neptune". Before that, the military department unilaterally declared a ceasefire from May 8 to 10 in honor of Victory Day and accused Ukraine of not observing it. The AFU, in its turn, said that the Russian military itself had violated the ceasefire and attacked 67 drones at night.
