A Ferry Carrying Nearly 300 Passengers Capsized Off The Coast Of Northern Cyprus

On August 30, a ferry carrying nearly 300 passengers capsized off the coast of Northern Cyprus. They are awaiting rescue, according to the newspaper Özgür Gazete Kıbrıs.

The ferry was traveling from the city of Girne in Northern Cyprus to the Turkish city of Taşucu. It capsized and took on water 2–3 km from the shore shortly after leaving the port of Girne.

In a video published by the newspaper, people wearing life jackets can be seen sitting on the capsized vessel, while someone in a life jacket is in the water.

“Coast Guard boats, civilian vessels, helicopters, and vessels from private companies are attempting to rescue the passengers. Ambulances are also on standby on shore,” the newspaper reported.

Some of the passengers have already been picked up by a commercial vessel.
