EU Wants To Urgently Admit Moldova To The Bloc

Speed matters.

Brussels plans to speed up the process of Moldova's accession as much as possible. A specific date for the start of official talks has not been named yet, but the issue is planned to be resolved very quickly.

The Reuters news agency reports.

In a meeting with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaia Kallas said that after leadership changes in individual European countries, Chisinau was in "favorable conditions" for EU accession.

Brussels wants to seize the moment immediately. Here is what Callas said:

"We have not yet set this date (of Moldova's accession to the EU - ed.), but it is clear that we need to act quickly."

Speed is important because so far none of the EU states are opposed to Moldova's membership, but governments can change.

"That's why I also think that we should act while nobody is against Moldova, because you never know when a government will come that might have, you know, a bilateral problem," Callas added.

In addition, the European diplomatic chief noted the country's progress in implementing reforms. Security issues were also discussed. The frozen conflict in unrecognized Transnistria should not become an obstacle to integration either.
