Drone Attack Paralyzes Airports In Russian Federation

The restrictions affected Moscow and the south of the aggressor country.

In Russia, 15 airports were temporarily closed after a drone attack. The restrictions affected both Moscow airports and air havens in the south of the country, DW reports.

On the night of Friday, May 8, Moscow was attacked by drones. The city's mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, claims that Russian air defenses shot down allegedly at least 20 drones that were moving toward the capital of the aggressor country.

"Emergency services specialists are working at the site where the debris fell," he wrote in his Telegram channel.

The work of Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports was suspended due to the drone attack.

It was reported earlier that more than 450 flights were delayed and canceled at the airports of the capital of the aggressor country. Local authorities claim that the cause was "an attack by Ukrainian drones."

Rosaviatsia later issued a warning that airports in southern Russia would be closed until May 12 due to a UAV strike on the Aeronavigatsiya South Russia branch in Rostov-on-Don.

On Friday afternoon, May 8, the agency canceled an earlier notice about the impossibility of flights to southern Russia.

"The State Corporation for Air Traffic Control, subordinate to Rosaviatsia, is ready to service flights at the airports of Astrakhan, Vladikavkaz, Volgograd, Gelendzhik, Grozny, Krasnodar, Makhachkala, Magas, Mineralnye Vody, Nalchik, Sochi, Stavropol and Elista," the agency said.

The Russian Association of Tour Operators (ATOR) confirmed the partial opening of airspace over the south of the Russian Federation.

According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, southern airports are expected to receive 217 flights by the end of the day. This is almost half the usual daily traffic, ATOR noted.
