An Unusual Heat Wave Has Swept Across Several European Countries

The current wave is caused by an atmospheric pressure phenomenon known as the omega block.

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu reported on Tuesday that 40 people have drowned in France over the past five days amid a heat wave. Authorities in several European countries are issuing warnings, closing schools and suspending operations at some businesses, according to The Moscow Times.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the European continent is warming twice as fast as the global average, making such prolonged heat waves increasingly likely.

The current heat wave is caused by an atmospheric pressure phenomenon known as an omega block, as its shape resembles the Greek letter omega: hot air is located at the center of the high-pressure system, while cooler air masses are on either side. According to meteorologists, this has resulted in a so-called heat dome covering western and central Europe, trapping the heated air and causing temperatures to rise even higher each day.

According to Meteo France, a heat warning has been issued for almost all of France: temperatures of up to 43 degrees Celsius are expected in some areas in the west of the country.

Italy’s Ministry of Health has declared the highest alert level in 15 cities, and operations have been suspended at some industrial facilities. The UK Met Office forecasts 37 degrees in southern England on Tuesday, with the heat intensifying over the next two days, leading to a new all-time record for June.

Spain’s national meteorological agency has issued a red alert in some regions where temperatures could rise to 44 degrees: on Monday, temperatures in the municipality of Andújar had already exceeded 45 degrees.
