Gasoline Is Running Out In Russia's Main Oil-Producing Region

Gas stations have started limiting sales to no more than 40 liters of gasoline per customer.

The fuel crisis in Russia resulting from Ukrainian drone strikes on oil infrastructure continues to intensify. Restrictions on gasoline sales have been imposed in the country’s main oil-producing region, which accounts for 40% of all Russian oil production, — the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (KhMAO), local residents told the publication “Govorit NeMoscow.” Specifically, Gazpromneft gas stations have begun limiting purchases to no more than 40 liters of gasoline and 80 liters of diesel “per customer.” Furthermore, fuel can only be dispensed into a vehicle’s tank and must be paid for in advance. According to an employee at one of the gas stations, these restrictions were introduced on the night of June 23, reports The Moscow Times.

“What a mess, I think, as a citizen of the Russian Federation. We’re up to our ears in oil, wells are being shut down, we have nowhere to put the oil, and yet there’s no gasoline,” — commented a resident of the city of Raduzhny in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug. Similar restrictions have been introduced in the oil town of Strezhevoy in the neighboring Tomsk Region. “These limits and restrictions are primarily intended to protect us from fuel being transported from Strezhevoy gas stations to other regions in barrels and other large containers,” — explained the city’s mayor Valery Denichenko. Drivers from Tyumen, Russia’s oil and gas capital, also reported the limits at Gazpromneft gas stations.

On the morning of June 23, the head of the Novosibirsk Region Andrey Travnikov stated that fuel sales in the region would have to be restricted because limits on gasoline and diesel had been introduced in neighboring regions. According to him, he instructed the regional Ministry of Industry and Trade to “hold talks with the owners of gas station chains to develop a unified position on this issue within the day.”

The day before, authorities in six Russian regions—Omsk, Irkutsk, Saratov, Voronezh, Tambov, and Amur Oblasts—announced restrictions on fuel sales at gas stations. In total, limits have already been imposed in more than 50 regions.
