They refused to believe what they had heard.
The Kremlin urged people not to believe reports that U.S. President Donald Trump has supported Ukraine’s increased military pressure on Russia, including strikes deep into Russian territory. This was previously reported by informed sources cited by the Ukrainian publication Kyiv Independent and the British newspaper Financial Times (FT).
“You can’t trust the Ukrainian media—that’s the first thing. Second: we’ve very recently heard statements from Mr. Trump that once their conflict with Iran is over, he intends to resume his efforts toward a resolution in Ukraine,” said Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov. He added that Moscow expects the relevant dialogue with Washington to continue. Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the Kyiv Independent’s report “does not reflect reality.” “This is more a case of wishing reality were different,” Lavrov noted.
In mid-June, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7 summit in France. According to FT sources, the White House chief was “extremely impressed and inspired” by Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory and spoke at length with the Ukrainian leader about this. Sources at the Kyiv Independent clarified that Trump advised Zelenskyy to act “more boldly” toward Russia, since, in his view, Vladimir Putin is unlikely to agree to peace talks “without pressure.” One of the publication’s sources emphasized that Trump believes in the principle of “peace through strength.”
Sources at Politico also reported that the U.S. president had expressed his readiness to support Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia. Previously, sources speaking to Bloomberg noted that the U.S. president and his inner circle now believe Moscow will not be able to achieve victory on the battlefield, while Kyiv’s position is strengthening. Meanwhile, according to the FT, the U.S. has begun providing Kyiv with intelligence for strikes on Russian territory. In particular, a Moscow oil refinery was attacked with U.S. support. As Reuters reported, Ukrainian drones put the facility out of commission until 2027.
During a press briefing at the White House on June 24, Trump stated that Zelenskyy is doing “pretty well” in standing up to Russia. He called the Ukrainian leader “brave,” noting that he has “excellent equipment,” “excellent people,” and “has fighters.”
