Latvia Will Strengthen Its Air Defense Along The Border With Belarus

Engineering structures will also be reinforced.

Latvia will soon deploy additional air defense systems along its eastern border. Following a closed-door meeting of the Military Council attended by the country’s president , Defense Minister Raivis Melnis made the announcement.

According to him, the Ministry of Defense is working to strengthen border areas with new radars and air defense systems. At the same time, the minister acknowledged that it is impossible to completely prevent the infiltration of drones, but the authorities are taking measures to strengthen the air defense system.

Melnis noted that lengthy procurement procedures are hindering the implementation of these projects, but solutions have already been found that will allow for the deployment of additional defense systems in the near future.

He emphasized that effective airspace defense requires not only modern radars but also an integrated command and control system, as well as proper training for military personnel, and thanked Ukraine for sharing its expertise in this area.

During the Military Council meeting, participants also discussed strengthening engineering structures along the land border, improving the exchange of classified information between central authorities and municipalities, as well as civil security issues, in particular the operation of warning systems, shelters, and procedures during air raid alerts.
