The law will take effect on July 1.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has signed amendments to the Nuclear Energy Act that will allow the import and transit of nuclear weapons through the country.
This was reported by Charter97.org, citing the Finnish Parliament’s website.
According to the report, the law will take effect on July 1 and will lift the current bans on such operations.
Consequently, nuclear weapons belonging to NATO allies could potentially appear near Russia’s borders.
What Led Up to This
As a reminder, on July 17, the Finnish Parliament passed a bill authorizing the import, transport, delivery, and storage of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory if necessary for national defense.
The decision was made as part of Finland’s adaptation to NATO standards following its accession to the Alliance in 2023, as well as against the backdrop of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The Finnish government stated that these changes are aimed at strengthening deterrence amid an unpredictable security situation.
“With this proposal, we are strengthening Finland’s defense and ensuring the full use of NATO’s nuclear deterrent to protect Finland,” said Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen.
