Details.

U.S. President Donald Trump, at the urging of his administration, is considering purchasing the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius—amidst a stalemate in London’s plans to transfer sovereignty over the territory.

This was reported on June 8 by British publications The Guardian and The Telegraph.

According to a proposal developed by the White House, the U.S. government plans to bypass British officials and purchase the Chagos Archipelago directly—to ensure the stable operation of the joint U.S.-British military base at Diego Garcia.

However, for this plan to be implemented, the Chagos Islands must first be granted full sovereignty, which would allow the White House to conduct direct negotiations with Mauritius. Previous legislative initiatives to transfer the islands to Mauritius were completely frozen in April 2026 after the U.S. withdrew its support for this international treaty

According to The Telegraph, the purchase of the Chagos Islands is one of several proposals being considered by the U.S. The latest plan was put forward by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and presented to President Trump—although, according to available information, this is not currently a priority option.

As The Telegraph reports, some officials in the Trump administration have expressed concern about transferring the islands to Mauritius—an ally of China—which could open opportunities for spying on the Diego Garcia base.

At the same time, as reported by the British media, discussions regarding a potential U.S. purchase of the Chagos Islands are taking place against the backdrop of the U.S.-Israel war against Iran, which has been ongoing since late February. The Diego Garcia base is located in the central Indian Ocean, approximately 3,800 km from Iran. Moreover, it is equipped with an airfield capable of accommodating carriers of American long-range missiles.

Since the start of the war, Iran has already launched several strikes against the joint base. One such strike in late March was intercepted by a U.S. warship, according to British media reports.

President Trump then sharply criticized London’s timing of the decision, calling it “very belated,” and emphasized that British authorities should have approved these actions much earlier. Later, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a social media post, addressed British Prime Minister Keir Starmer with a warning, noting that he was putting British lives at risk by allowing the Kingdom’s bases to be used for aggression against Iran, the publications concluded.
