And he turned to the soldiers.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accompanied by officials, visited Israeli troops in southern occupied Lebanon. During the visit, he said that the Israeli army would not be leaving the region for the time being.
This was reported by Reuters.
This was Netanyahu’s first visit to occupied Lebanese territory since the Israeli and Lebanese governments reached a U.S.-brokered security agreement last Friday, under which Jerusalem will hand over two areas to the Lebanese army.
The Israeli prime minister arrived in the area where IDF units are stationed, accompanied by Defense Minister Israël Katz, Chief of the General Staff Eyal Zamir, and other military leaders.
During his address to the soldiers, the Israeli prime minister emphasized that the troops would remain in their current positions until the threat posed by the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite group “Hezbollah” had been eliminated.
“We will hold this line until it becomes clear that there is no threat on the other side,” Netanyahu said.
As the agency notes, Netanyahu’s visit took place against the backdrop of Washington’s efforts to stabilize the situation on the Israeli-Lebanese border.
As noted above, last week the parties reached a preliminary agreement, brokered by the U.S., to transfer two areas to the control of the Lebanese Army.
At the same time, Israel refuses to fully withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon. Netanyahu insists that the Israeli army’s presence is necessary to prevent the rebuilding of Hezbollah’s military infrastructure.
