A combat group is heading to the Middle East.
A U.S. naval task force carrying the 11th Marine Expeditionary Battalion is currently in the Indian Ocean, en route to the Middle East.
This was reported on its social media account X by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which is responsible for the Middle East.
According to CENTCOM, two large U.S. amphibious assault ships, the USS Boxer and the USS Portland, carrying the 11th Marine Expeditionary Battalion, are heading to the Middle East (toward the Persian Gulf).
Another large amphibious assault ship, the USS Comstock, arrived in CENTCOM’s area of responsibility in May of this year.
A CENTCOM statement notes that the aforementioned amphibious assault group is operating in the Middle East as part of a planned deployment. Its current mission has not been specified.
In mid-June, the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding, extending their ceasefire by 60 days. During these 60 days—that is, by mid-August—they are supposed to agree on the terms of a final peace agreement and sign it.
However, the U.S. has not withdrawn its troops from the region, as it is prepared to resume hostilities against Iran if Tehran does not sign a final peace agreement.
According to insider information from The Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Donald Trump considered the possibility of resuming the war with Iran but has decided to stick with diplomacy for now.
It is reported that Trump discussed resuming the war with Iran with Defense Secretary Pete Hegset and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Kane.
