Bloomberg: Thanks To The 6-metric-ton "Flamingo," Ukraine Has Achieved A Breakthrough In The War

The scale of the attacks shows just how quickly Kyiv's capabilities have grown.

Bloomberg Bloomberg reports that Ukraine has significantly expanded the range and intensity of its missile strikes on Russian territory. According to the agency, Ukrainian missiles are now capable of striking targets across nearly half of Russian territory.

In May, Ukrainian “Flamingo” cruise missiles flew more than 1,500 km for the first time and struck a factory in Cheboksary. Ukraine later also reported long-range strikes on Russian military and industrial facilities.

“This marks a significant breakthrough in Ukraine’s campaign to launch long-range strikes… The ‘Flamingo’ cruise missiles allow for strikes deep into Russian territory using large-caliber warheads,” said Douglas Barry, a senior research fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

The “Flamingo” missile weighs 6 metric tons and contains 1 metric ton of explosives. Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov declined to comment to Bloomberg. At the start of the war, missile alerts in Russia were largely limited to border regions and the occupied territories of Ukraine. But this year, according to a Bloomberg analysis, alerts have sounded at least once in regions where more than 70% of Russia’s population lives. The scale of the attacks demonstrates how rapidly Kyiv’s long-range strike capabilities have grown and how Ukraine is increasing pressure on Putin to force him to the negotiating table. According to Barry, the ability to strike Russia’s critical infrastructure “inflicts damage on elements of the Russian military-industrial complex, hurts the economy, and demonstrates to the Russian public that the war against Ukraine comes at a cost.”

Barry believes that such strikes should increase pressure on the Kremlin, but it is unclear whether this will make Putin more inclined to negotiate. For Russia, this is already a new reality: the war, which the Kremlin has tried to keep away from the population, is increasingly spilling into the heart of the country.
