Russia has begun importing gasoline by sea from India to alleviate the fuel shortage in the domestic market caused by drone attacks on energy infrastructure, two industry sources told Reuters.
According to one of the agency’s sources, at least 60,000 metric tons of gasoline were shipped from India to Russia. Another source said that two tankers carrying shipments ranging from 30,000 to 40,000 metric tons had been dispatched.
A third source clarified that Moscow plans to import 400,000 metric tons of gasoline monthly from various countries, including neighboring Belarus, which is already supplying fuel to the Russian market.
Gasoline consumption in Russia during the summer, when demand is high, stands at about 110,000 metric tons per day, according to Reuters sources. However, the average daily consumption fell to 85,000 metric tons after Ukrainian drones struck Russian oil refineries more than 40 times, including 9 of the 10 largest ones.
This has led to fuel shortages in nearly all Russian regions. More than 40 regions have imposed official restrictions on gasoline sales—ranging from limiting the number of liters per person to banning the filling of fuel into canisters.
