Mbappé and Dembélé scored.
The French national team confidently advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup, defeating Morocco 2–0 in the tournament’s first quarterfinal match. The match took place late in the evening on July 9 at Foxborough Stadium, near Boston (Massachusetts, USA).
The French controlled the game from the opening minutes, but were not able to open the scoring until the 60th minute. The first goal was scored by team captain Kylian Mbappé. Just six minutes later, Ousmane Dembélé doubled the “Tricolores’” lead, sealing the final score of the match.
Earlier in the first half, Mbappé had a chance to put his team ahead but missed a penalty kick—the French forward’s shot was saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who also holds Canadian citizenship by birth.
Despite missing the penalty kick, Mbappé once again tied Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi for the lead in the tournament’s scoring race. Both forwards now have eight goals to their credit. Ousmane Dembélé, with five goals, is also among the tournament’s top scorers.
For France, this victory marked yet another successful matchup against Morocco at the World Cup. In the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the French also defeated the Moroccans 2–0. At that time, the Moroccan national team became the first African team in history to reach the World Cup semifinals. Overall, France has never lost to Morocco in their head-to-head history: the European team has five wins and three draws.
