Political Prisoner Denis Ivashin Has Been Placed In Solitary Confinement Again

His family hasn't received any letters from him for three weeks now.

Political prisoner Denis Ivashin, who was sentenced to 13 years in prison, has likely been placed in solitary confinement again. The journalist’s family has not received any letters from him from Mogilev Correctional Colony No. 5 for three weeks.

This is reported by the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ).

Denis Ivashin was returned to the Mogilev penal colony on June 18—prior to that, he had spent three years in Prison No. in Zhodino. His letter to his mother was dated that very day, and his wife subsequently received a letter dated June 21. Since then, they have not received a single letter from Denis.

The journalist’s wife Olga added that she “doesn’t expect anything good from her husband’s stay at IK-15.” That is where Denis was initially sent to serve his sentence, and there he was beaten, mocked him for speaking Belarusian, prohibited him from making phone calls, receiving food parcels, or meeting with his parents, and placed him in solitary confinement several times. And all of this happened in just the few months he was forced to spend at IK-15.

Soon after, a trial took place—one that even his lawyer was unaware of—and the journalist’s sentence was increased: he was transferred from the penal colony to a strict-regime prison, Prison No. in Zhodino.
