Former Ukrainian Interior Minister Klymenko To Become Secretary Of The National Security And Defense Council

He will replace Umerov.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he will appoint former Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko as Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. Zelenskyy made this announcement following a meeting with Klymenko on Friday, July 17.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Igor Klymenko for his work within the Ministry of Internal Affairs, noting that he had responded effectively to numerous challenges. The head of state emphasized that he expects the new NSDC Secretary to ensure coordinated work within the security and defense sector:

“The most important thing is the most effective coordination possible among all components of the security and defense sector and daily monitoring of the implementation of decisions.”

According to the president, every government agency must operate as efficiently as possible to achieve its objectives. Ihor Klymenko must pay particular attention to monitoring the implementation of decisions made by the NSDC and the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Headquarters.

The President also identified specific areas that will be priorities for Ihor Klymenko in his new position. A separate task will be the coordination of defense production. Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized:

“Every decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine and the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Headquarters must be implemented in full and within the established deadlines.”

As a reminder, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) is Rustem Umerov. He was appointed to this position on July 18, 2025.
