Belarusian Kefir Has Been Banned In Russia

Starting July 15.

Russia has banned shipments of kefir from a major Belarusian company. The Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor) published a letter to that effect.

The ban applies to kefir produced by the Zhlobin Dairy Plant, a subsidiary of the Rogachev Dairy Canning Plant. As a result, Rosselkhoznadzor has suspended veterinary certification of kefir from this plant effective July 15. Information regarding “temporary restrictions” on this product has been entered into the Customs Union registry.

Incidentally, a month earlier, the plant’s products were placed under enhanced laboratory monitoring due to excessive yeast levels in the kefir.

Previously, Rosselkhoznadzor banned meat and cheese from three Belarusian plants due to the presence of E. coli and drug residues.
