Magyar Has Found An Unexpected Candidate For The Hungarian Presidency

He is a chess legend.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar intends to nominate the greatest female chess player in history, Judit Polgár, to be the country’s next president. If she agrees, her candidacy will be considered by parliament, according to Reuters.

According to Mádjár, he will meet with 49-year-old Judit Polgár and offer her the presidency of Hungary.

The prime minister stated that Polgár could become a symbol of national unity. He noted that her name has been associated with talent and perseverance for several decades.
The proposal came a day after incumbent President Tamás Szujók signed a constitutional amendment passed by the ruling Tisa party. The document terminates his term early.

This measure is part of the reforms that Magyar has been implementing following his decisive victory in the April parliamentary elections. According to him, the changes are aimed at dismantling the political legacy of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The new president is to be elected by parliament, where Mádjár’s party holds a constitutional majority. It is expected that the head of state will hold office until the new constitution takes effect, but for no more than five years.

Judit Polgár is considered the strongest female chess player in history. She has repeatedly competed in tournaments alongside men and remains the only woman whose FIDE rating has exceeded 2,700 points—a level considered indicative of the chess elite. As a member of the Hungarian national team, Polgár also won the 1988 World Chess Olympiad, ending the Soviet team’s long-standing dominance.

Judit Polgár herself has not yet publicly commented on the prime minister’s proposal.
