Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit to the U.S. on July 28, “achieved a feat” that seemed impossible just a year ago. He convinced Washington that Ukraine can win the war against Russia.
This was reported by Politico.
Unlike Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House in February 2025, when a dispute arose in the Oval Office with Donald Trump, this time the Ukrainian president left his meeting with the U.S. president in high spirits.
Politico notes that the situation in Washington has changed for the better for Ukraine.
Moreover, Zelenskyy’s trip ended with yet another victory when senators voted in favor of a bill by Lindsey Graham to impose sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil.
The vote brought the U.S. Congress closer to achieving Zelenskyy’s priority and is yet another sign that things are looking up for Kyiv, not just on the battlefield.
However, the bill still has to go through all stages of the legislative process, and the White House’s final position on it remains uncertain.
According to U.S. lawmakers, the main topics of discussion between Zelenskyy and U.S. senators were increasing sanctions pressure on Moscow, military aid to Ukraine, and the prospects for peace talks.
During his visit to the U.S. Capitol, the Ukrainian leader emphasized that sanctions could help consolidate the gains made by the Defense Forces on the front lines and compel Putin to engage in peace talks. These arguments began to bear fruit, as senators from both parties supported Zelenskyy’s strategy.
At the meeting, the Ukrainian president also noted the need to expand military support for Ukraine.
Specifically, the discussion focused on licenses to manufacture interceptor missiles for the Patriot systems, deliveries of PAC-3 interceptor missiles, and ensuring uninterrupted access to Starlink satellite communications for strikes deep into Russian territory.
Zelenskyy’s Visit to the U.S.
On July 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington for a visit and met with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The leaders discussed the production of interceptors for the Patriot air defense system, the revitalization of the negotiation process, and other issues.
According to Trump, the meeting went “very well”.
In addition, yesterday the U.S. Senate, during a procedural vote, supported a bill to tighten sanctions against Russia and Iran, one of the authors of which was Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
During his visit to the U.S., Zelenskyy met with more than 60 U.S. senators. So far, the sanctions against Russia have not been definitively approved; they still face another Senate vote, which is scheduled to take place before August, after which the matter will go to the House of Representatives.
