The U.S. and Israel are discussing the imposition of a land blockade against Iran as one of several possible steps to intensify economic pressure on the Islamic Republic, according to The Telegraph reports, citing sources.
According to their reports, President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed further measures to pressure Iran “through kinetic and non-kinetic means” during a meeting at the White House on Tuesday. “What if we simply impose a land blockade? Let’s say Iran can’t import anything and can’t export anything. Anything could happen,” a high-ranking Israeli official told the newspaper, outlining one of the options discussed at the meeting.
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Trump believes that his current strategy to reopen the Strait of Hormuz has reached an impasse, and as a result, he is considering “various options for escalation” that could force Tehran back to the negotiating table. A land blockade would fit perfectly into his “maximum pressure” strategy aimed at undermining the Iranian economy, which was preceded by a naval blockade. However, such actions would require U.S.-Israeli pressure on Iran’s neighbors and regional partners to tighten or close border crossings, which threatens to reduce trade flows.
Iran shares borders with Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, which, as The Telegraph notes, could face retaliatory strikes from Iran if they decide to close their borders. A land blockade could target key border crossings, such as Inche-Burun and Serakhs, which connect Iran and Turkmenistan.
There is also a possibility that reports of a land blockade are a “distraction” by the U.S. and Israel intended to conceal from Tehran the actions they are actually preparing, adds The Telegraph. According to a well-informed Israeli official, participants in the White House meeting discussed three options for further action in the war, which flared up again in the first half of July following Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. These include reaching an agreement, continuing the naval blockade, and resuming strikes.
Earlier, Axios also reported that Trump and Netanyahu discussed three possible scenarios regarding Iran at the White House. As the publication’s sources noted, the Israeli prime minister was skeptical about the prospects for success in negotiations with Tehran involving special envoys Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner.
