Italy Suspends The Schengen Agreement With Spain

Italy has unilaterally announced the suspension of the Schengen Agreement on free border crossings with Spain in response to mass influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

The Italian Ministry of the Interior announced the closure of its sea and air borders with Spain, effectively suspending the Schengen Agreement.

The decision was made during a meeting on Friday morning at the Ministry of the Interior, chaired by Minister Matteo Piantedosi, based on information from the Committee for the Analysis of Immigration and Border Security.

Italy does not share a land border with Spain, but this measure will affect people traveling between the two countries by air or sea.

In addition, the Italian minister agreed with his French counterpart Laurent Nunez to strengthen controls along the land border between Italy and France.

It is worth noting that the Schengen Agreement, signed in 1985, allows for free movement within Europe. However, participating countries may temporarily reinstate controls at internal borders under certain circumstances.
