The man who attempted to assassinate the commander of the National Guard's "Charter" Corps Igor Obolensky, the weapon failed to fire, reports "Ukrainska Pravda" reports, citing law enforcement sources.

The publication reports that the man approached the commander from behind in Kharkiv.

According to the publication, the man, who was preparing to carry out the assassination attempt on Obolensky, was detained on July 31 near a barbershop in Kharkiv. A Makarov pistol and ammunition were seized from the suspect, who turned out to be a 69-year-old Kharkiv resident.

According to investigators, the man was recruited remotely by the special services of the aggressor state, Russia, who posed as representatives of the SBU, UP reports. They recruited the man by convincing him that Obolensky was allegedly a “traitor,” the report states. As proof, they sent the man an AI-generated photo purportedly showing Obolensky in front of the Kremlin wearing a T-shirt with Russian symbols.

The detainee stated that the weapon was handed over to him in Kharkiv on the instructions of his handler, the publication reports. Law enforcement officials are currently working to identify who handed over the weapon, analyzing CCTV footage, and investigating possible accomplices.
