FIFA has crossed the line.
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) criticized the decision by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to lift the suspension of U.S. national team forward Folarin Balogun for the Round of 16 match at the 2026 World Cup.
The organization believes that FIFA has crossed a red line regarding the integrity of soccer.
“The decision to suspend, for a one-year probationary period, the automatic one-match suspension following a red card issued to player Folarin Balogun has crossed a red line.
Soccer, like any other sport, is based on rules that form the foundation of fair, equitable, and transparent competition. Sometimes the rules allow for different interpretations. In this case—they do not.”
UEFA stated that the decision to suspend a player does not require additional approval from any organizations.
“The minimum automatic one-match suspension following a red card is not a discretionary decision and does not require a decision by a competent authority to be enforced.
This is a principle enshrined in the regulations that cannot be subject to exceptions, especially in the middle of a tournament where several other players found themselves in the same situation and regularly served their suspensions.”
UEFA noted that such a decision could have a negative impact on future soccer competitions.
“When compliance with the rules is no longer guaranteed by those who enforce them, the integrity of the game is threatened, and the credibility of the competition is undermined.
Furthermore, this decision sets a precedent in the current tournament, where similar situations will henceforth require the same approach, which will negatively affect the competition.
Soccer is the world’s most beloved sport because it is a beautiful game, and it is trusted because it is played by the same rules everywhere.
No tournament ever exists in isolation, and when it comes to the World Cup, it can have both positive and negative consequences for the game as a whole. We express our surprise at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustified decision."
According to GiveMeSport journalist Ben Jacobs, U.S. President Donald Trump called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to ask him to reconsider Balogun’s suspension.
