An Explosion Occurred At An Arms Factory In Italy

Weapons for Ukraine were manufactured there.

A powerful explosion occurred at the KNDS Ammo Italy factory in the Italian town of Colleferro, near Rome, which manufactures ammunition for the army and navy. This was reported on Thursday, August 13, by Reuters.

The company supplies weapons to Ukraine, among other countries. According to preliminary reports, the explosion occurred in the gunpowder pressing shop. Shortly before that, a fire broke out at the plant, which firefighters, accompanied by police, arrived to extinguish.

According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, there have been no reports of injuries or missing persons so far. The city’s mayor, Giulio Calamita, told reporters that almost no one was at the factory at the time of the incident.

KNDS Ammo Italy is part of a Franco-German defense conglomerate. According to the company itself, more than a hundred of its combat systems are currently in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. A subsidiary, KNDS Ukraine, operates in Ukraine, repairing and maintaining the conglomerate’s equipment and manufacturing spare parts and artillery shells.

This is the second such incident in the past week, as noted by "Deutsche Welle". On Monday, August 10, a fire also broke out at the EMCO facility near the village of Belitsa in Bulgaria. After a truck caught fire, the flames spread to an ammunition depot, triggering a chain reaction of explosions. The company has been supplying shells and weapons to Ukraine since 2014. No injuries were reported. Explosions had already occurred at EMCO facilities in 2022 and 2023.
