A New Airborne Assault Brigade Is Being Actively Formed In Belarus

It will be stationed in the south of the country, near Gomel.

Since early 2026, work has been underway in Belarus to form a new major unit, the 37th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade. Alexander Ilyukevich, commander of the Special Operations Forces of the Belarusian Armed Forces, spoke about this on “VoenTV.”

News of the brigade’s formation first emerged in February 2026. “It will be stationed near Gomel; we have already begun forming military units, and one battalion has been formed. This year, we are forming another battalion, as well as combat support, artillery, anti-aircraft, and reconnaissance units,” Ilyukevich stated at the time.

Today, August 2, 2026, he noted on “VoenTV” that the new unit will be designated as No. 37. At this point, a number of units and subunits have already been formed, officers have been recruited, and personnel have been drafted. In 2027, the new brigade will be redeployed near Gomel (the distance from the city to the border with Ukraine is about 40 km).

Currently, there are three such brigades in Belarus: the 103rd in Vitebsk, the 38th in Brest, and the 5th in Maryina Gorka.
