Lukashenko Fired The First Deputy Chief Of The General Staff
Andrei Matijevich

Matievich has been discharged to the reserves due to his age.

Major General Andrei Matyevich has been relieved of his post as first deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus. Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree to that effect on August 20, the dictator’s press service reported.

The general has been discharged from active military service and placed in the reserve due to age—with the right to wear a military uniform and insignia.

Andrei Matievich was born on September 2, 1971, in the village of Bolshoye Olzhevo in the Lida District. He studied at the Minsk Suvorov Military School, then graduated from the Almaty Higher Combined Arms Command School, and later from the Frunze Combined Arms Academy of the Russian Armed Forces and the General Staff Academy of the Russian Armed Forces. He graduated from all of these institutions with a gold medal or honors.

He served in the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff, and since 2020 has headed territorial defense. He received his major general’s epaulets in 2021 from Lukashenko himself. In 2023, Lukashenko appointed Matievich first as deputy chief of the General Staff, and then as first deputy chief of the General Staff.
