Britain Will Strip Russian Submarines Of Their "Invisibility"

London continues its hunt for Russian submarines.
Britain is testing new submarine detection technology that could significantly change the way the Russian fleet is monitored in the North Atlantic and the English Channel. The technology in question is Optics11’s compact fiber-optic hydroacoustic systems, known as OptiArray, according to The Telegraph.
The system is housed in a standard 10-foot container and can be towed by a regular civilian vessel. It does not require an electromagnetic field to detect targets, which allows for passive surveillance and reduces the likelihood of the system itself being detected.
According to the publication, the system is capable of detecting large targets at distances of up to 100 kilometers and military ships at distances of approximately 50 kilometers. In addition, the equipment can be deployed directly on the seafloor to monitor areas where submarine cables and pipelines run.
The technology is already in use by the Netherlands and has been tested by the British Navy. Representatives of the two countries’ defense ministries view it as a potentially important tool for anti-submarine warfare and the protection of critical undersea infrastructure.
London’s interest is growing against the backdrop of the activity of Russian ships and submarines in European waters. The appearance of the nuclear submarine “Khabarovsk”—the carrier of the “Poseidon” strategic system—during trials is causing further concern.
Britain continues to build up its anti-submarine defense capabilities by investing in unmanned platforms, new Type 26 and Type 31 frigates, and nuclear submarines. Separately, London has allocated approximately 330 million pounds to protect undersea cables and pipelines.
“The proliferation of relatively inexpensive passive systems could significantly complicate the operations of the Russian Navy, which traditionally relies on the stealth of its submarine operations,” the authors write.
