It happened during an inspection.
Near Huliaipole, the commander of the Russian 64th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade Dmitry Shabaev was wounded. This occurred on August 19 during an inspection he was conducting at one of the unit’s command posts in the Zaporizhzhia region.
The brigade, led by Shabaev, was notorious for its atrocities in Bucha during the occupation of parts of the Kyiv region at the start of the full-scale war. This was reported by the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar military movement “Atesh”.

“Atesh” learned of Shabaev’s injury from an agent inside the unit.
“An ‘Atesh’ agent from the headquarters of the Russian Armed Forces’ 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade reports that his brigade commander, Colonel Dmitry Shabaev, was wounded yesterday, August 19, while inspecting one of the brigade’s command posts near the village of Gulaypole. The commander was evacuated; information about his condition is being clarified,” the report states.
The movement also noted that this brigade has distinguished itself by particular cruelty not only toward Ukrainians but also toward its own troops: According to “Atesh,” “the elimination of undesirable servicemen who ask unnecessary questions, criticize the brigade commander’s decisions, or refuse to send their subordinates on obviously suicidal assaults is practiced there.”
“And it very much appears that Colonel Shabaev’s subordinates acted preemptively this time,” “Atesh” suggested, implying that the Defense Forces may not have been involved in the wounding of the Russian commander.
The Russian Armed Forces’ 64th Motorized Rifle Brigade “gained notoriety” worldwide for its atrocities and war crimes in Bucha at the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“The brigade’s command has long been accustomed to using terrorist methods of reprisal not only against the civilian population of Ukraine, but also against its own personnel,” “Atesh” emphasized.
