German intelligence agencies discovered a cache of weapons near Berlin.
This is reported by NDR, WDR, and the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Late last summer, intelligence agents, acting on a tip from an informant, stumbled upon a hideout in the woods where the pistols were stored.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) currently believes that this cache was set up on behalf of Russian intelligence services.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case on suspicion of planning a serious act of violence threatening the state. A suspect has been detained in Romania.
According to NDR, WDR, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung, law enforcement received a tip about a professionally equipped cache in Brandenburg, which borders the capital Berlin, and discovered two handguns there.
The weapons found were rendered inoperable. Afterward, the hideout was placed under surveillance, but this yielded no results. According to media reports, the perpetrators were likely aware that the hideout had been discovered.
German security agencies are now convinced that the weapons were intended for agents who were to carry out “kinetic operations”—specifically, assassinations—in Germany on behalf of Moscow.
For several months, BfV Director Sinan Selen had been warning that Russia might carry out attacks on individuals. Potential targets included weapons manufacturers, exiled opposition figures, and supporters of Ukraine.
Earlier, the head of the German drone manufacturer Donaustahl Stefan Tumann said that was forced to go into hiding from Russian intelligence services amid reports of a plot to assassinate him.
