Lithuania will expedite the opening of the remaining clusters for Ukraine during its presidency of the European Union.

During its presidency of the EU Council, Lithuania is making every effort to accelerate the opening of the remaining negotiation clusters for Ukraine. At the same time, Kyiv will have to fulfill its own commitments.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated during the Ukraine–Nordic-Baltic Eight summit in Kyiv.

Lithuania will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union starting January 1, 2027. According to Nausėda, the country is using every opportunity to accelerate the process of opening the remaining negotiation clusters for Ukraine.

“So far, we have opened two out of six, and I think there isn’t much time left before the remaining clusters are opened,” the Lithuanian president noted.

What Ukraine Must Do

Nausėda emphasized that Ukraine must also fulfill its obligations. According to him, it is important to demonstrate this to all EU member states, since not all of them are as enthusiastic about expansion as Lithuania is.

“And for the skeptics, for those who have doubts, it is important to show that this truly represents progress in implementing reforms in the country, and that there is a shared understanding of the reforms among the political elite and society,” he said.

The Lithuanian president added that action must be taken as soon as possible, because time is running out, and time is now a very valuable resource.

Nausėda emphasized that his country will always stand by Ukraine, support it, and encourage it even more, as this approach is based on merit.
