The U.S. expects the House of Representatives to consider a bill next month on extensive sanctions against Russia. One of its authors, Senator Richard Blumenthal, called the bill a tool that should significantly increase pressure on Moscow.

According to Blumenthal, the bill has significant support among Republicans in the House of Representatives. The bill reached the House of Representatives in early August.

A “Sledgehammer” for Putin

The senator stated that the bill should serve as a powerful tool to exert pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Putin only understands force. And the bill on sanctions against Russia is a sledgehammer with the kind of force that Putin understands,” Blumenthal said.

The bill provides for sanctions against Russian officials. In addition, it will give U.S. President Donald Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on the largest buyers of Russian oil and gas.

This applies, in particular, to China and India. Such a mechanism is intended to reduce the revenue Moscow receives from energy exports and uses to fund the war against Ukraine.

Democrats had concerns

Despite the Democrats’ overall support for the sanctions, some party representatives expressed concern about the powers the bill would grant Trump, the agency notes.

In particular, they raised concerns about the possibility of imposing additional tariffs on U.S. allies.

Blumenthal stated that the exemptions provided for in the bill would prevent tariffs from being imposed on European allies. According to him, this should alleviate some of the concerns expressed by Democrats in Congress.
