Two case studies are of particular importance.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe during a visit to Moscow on August 25 called on Russian authorities not to escalate the conflict with the U.S.’s NATO allies and to reduce aid to Iran.

This was reported by Politico reports, citing insider information.

According to Politico, during a meeting with Russian officials, Ratcliffe asked that Russia not escalate the conflict with the U.S.’s NATO allies. The discussion focused primarily on Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which are located on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Politico’s sources also claim that the CIA director asked Russia to scale back its support for Iran, particularly military and economic support.

This week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the launch of Operation “Economic Outcast,” which aims to completely isolate Iran economically. Trump promised to impose tough sanctions against countries that provide economic aid to Tehran. The U.S. leader believes that such pressure will force the Iranian authorities to make concessions and sign a peace agreement with the U.S.

Trump called Ratcliffe’s trip to Moscow “routine.” At the same time, he acknowledged that one of the goals of the visit was to negotiate the terms for ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. The spokesperson for the Russian dictator Dmitry Peskov claims that Ratcliffe came to Moscow to hold talks through intelligence channels. He did not meet with Putin.
