Germany Has Begun Negotiations On Investments In The Modernization Of Britain's Nuclear Weapons

Germany plans to finance the British sea-based Trident nuclear system. The countries are actively negotiating this issue due to the Russian threat and concerns about a reduction in the U.S. military presence in Europe, sources told The Telegraph. According to them, Germany wants to integrate more closely with the existing nuclear forces of the United Kingdom and France rather than building its own arsenal. Berlin is “very interested” in them “expanding their capabilities,” a source told the publication.
Specifically, discussions are underway regarding Germany’s assistance to the UK in building next-generation submarines, manufacturing missiles, or enriching uranium for future warheads. Another option is the provision of conventional weapons to protect British infrastructure, including the deployment of German Patriot systems at the Trident submarine base in Faslane, Scotland, sources said.
However, a source within the British Ministry of Defense questioned whether German industry possesses the necessary expertise to build and maintain the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet. In his view, “the possibility of participating in the defense of Faslane seems more realistic.”
London possesses approximately 200 nuclear warheads and already contributes its deterrent forces to NATO’s defense. However, the modernization of the British arsenal depends on cooperation with the United States, since Trident missiles are manufactured and maintained there. At the same time, successive British governments have postponed costly decisions regarding the modernization of these missiles due to financial constraints and the need to rearm for conventional warfare, which has led to the idea of potential German funding.
At the same time, Germany is negotiating with France on closer cooperation in the nuclear sphere. Berlin and Paris have already conducted joint exercises on the use of nuclear weapons to defend Europe, and this fall, the German military is set to participate for the first time in the French nuclear exercises “Poker.”
France’s nuclear capabilities appeal to European countries because of their independence from the United States. President Emmanuel Macron previously proposed that allies discuss the possibility of protecting the republic under a nuclear umbrella. However, his departure from office next year could call the future of this strategy into question.
Negotiations between Germany, the United Kingdom, and France on nuclear weapons have intensified in recent months due to concerns about a possible reduction in the U.S. military presence in Europe. “Politicians wake up every morning and ask themselves, ‘What the hell are the Americans going to do tomorrow?’” said a German diplomatic source.
At the same time, discussions about Germany acquiring its own nuclear weapons have also intensified. According to sources, such discussions were previously dismissed on the assumption that, in the event of a serious threat, the U.S. would deploy its nuclear forces to defend Europe. Now, following Washington’s policy shift, the situation is viewed differently in Berlin.
