Tesla's Boldest Project Will Finally Hit The Roads

This is a driverless Cybercab with no steering wheel.

Tesla will hold an event in Austin on September 3 to launch its self-driving Cybercab. The new vehicle is expected to be the next step in the development of the Robotaxi service and, over time, replace the Model Y electric vehicles currently in use, according to Autoblog.

The exact timing for the start of commercial rides with the Cybercab has not yet been disclosed. Unlike the Model Y, which is currently used in the Robotaxi service, the Cybercab was designed specifically for autonomous transportation. The two-seater vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals, which means a passenger will not be able to take control on their own in the event of a problem.

Production of the vehicle has already begun in Texas, and Tesla has been conducting road tests in Austin since June. During some of the tests, a company employee was present in the cabin to serve as a safety observer.

However, the September event cannot yet be considered a full-scale launch of commercial service. Tesla has not announced exactly when the Cybercab will begin carrying paying passengers or the scale at which the service will operate.

If the Cybercab does indeed hit the roads after the event, Tesla will be attempting for the first time to build a commercial taxi fleet around a vehicle that is completely devoid of traditional controls.
