Canada Put Trump In His Place Over The Renaming Of Lake Ontario

The U.S. president was reminded of the historical context.

U.S. President Donald Trump officially renamed Lake Ontario, which separates the United States and Canada, as Lake America. But Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded with dignity and recalled the historical context.

This was reported by Charter97.org, citing a post by Prime Minister Mark Carney on the social network X.

The Canadian prime minister wrote that the name of Lake Ontario derives from the word “Ontari’io” in the language of the Wendat Indigenous people, which, quite appropriately, means “beautiful lake, large lake.”

Carney noted that this name is over 400 years old—it appeared long before the formation of the Canadian Confederation and the declaration of independence of the United States of America.

“We know that America is changing. Its trade relations, foreign policy, national monuments, and the names of geographic features are changing. Canadians also know that calling a spade a spade means calling this Lake Ontario—then, now, and always,” Carney noted.

Earlier, the U.S. president signed an executive order in front of reporters to rename Lake Ontario, which separates the two countries. Before that, he had done so himself by simply crossing out the name on a map and writing “Lake America” in marker.
