Zaluzhny Explained His Controversial Statement On Ukraine's NATO Membership

The former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine assured that he supports the Alliance.

Former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Ukrainian Ambassador to London Valeriy Zaluzhny described himself as a supporter of NATO, but called on the military alliance to adapt to modern threats. His remarks were reported by “Interfax-Ukraine.”

“Sitting before you is a man who, in 2019, with these very hands and this very mind, personally drafted the entire reform and amendments to nearly 37 legislative acts aimed at transitioning Ukraine’s strategic-level command and control system to NATO principles and standards. I’ve made so many enemies that you can’t even imagine. I’m for NATO,” Zaluzhny said.

At the same time, he noted that “many questions arise regarding NATO as an alliance that protected the old world.” He pointed out that the North Atlantic Alliance is, in terms of doctrine, still stuck at the end of World War II, while Ukraine has moved ahead technologically. According to him, the conflict with Russia has taken the Ukrainian Armed Forces “to a whole new level,” and now NATO has no choice but to adopt new standards.

“Ukraine is fighting Russia without being in NATO. Let NATO be honest: are they ready to fight Russia without Ukraine’s experience?” Zaluzhny said.
