Major General Valery Plokhotnyuk, who is believed to have died in the an explosion at the Balzi Rossi restaurant, where a birthday celebration was being held for Colonel General Alexander Chaiko, commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces.
According to Russian records and media reports, Plokhotnyuk’s death is dated August 1—the day of the explosion.

Russian authorities have not released any details regarding the general’s death or the circumstances of the incident. All that is known is that the explosion occurred in a restaurant where, according to media reports, an event involving representatives of the Russian military leadership was taking place.
Valery Plokhotnyuk previously headed the Operational Group of Russian Forces in the unrecognized region of Transnistria—he commanded this group from 2011 to 2013.
Later, the general served as chief of staff of the Russian Federation’s 49th Combined Arms Army. Units of this army participated in combat operations in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia sectors following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Also, on August 5, the funeral was held for Daniil Peredrya—the son-in-law of Alexander Chaiko, commander of the Russian Federation’s Aerospace Forces. According to Russian opposition media, the general’s daughter sustained serious injuries and is currently in the hospital.
The explosion occurred on the evening of August 1 at the entrance to the Balzi Rossi restaurant, which was closed for a private event.
According to the official version of the Russian Federation’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee, an unidentified woman attempted to bring a homemade explosive device, disguised as a gift, into the restaurant, but was stopped by a security guard.
Five people were killed in the explosion, and another 21 were injured. Following the incident, a criminal case was opened in Russia under the article on terrorist acts.
