Azerbaijani Opposition Figure Ali Kerimli Has Reported Inhumane Conditions In Prison

Human rights activists are calling for an end to the abuse and for the politician to be released.
Azerbaijani opposition leader Ali Kerimli, who has been under arrest since late 2025, stated through his relatives that his conditions of detention had sharply deteriorated. During a hearing at the Court of Appeals, where his appeal requesting that his detention be replaced with house arrest was being considered, the politician repeatedly asked for water because, according to him, he is being denied access to drinking water in the detention center even during extreme heat.
“In this terrible heat, they won’t give me any water,” he said during the court hearing. On the day of the hearing, the temperature in Baku reached 30–35 degrees Celsius with high humidity, making dehydration particularly dangerous. The politician’s relatives also told Charter97.org that on the way to court, he lost consciousness in the police van after being denied drinking water.
“They’re killing me here,” he conveyed in a brief but alarming message.
Over the months of his detention, the politician has lost a significant amount of weight, his appearance has changed noticeably, and deep signs of physical exhaustion have appeared on his face. During the hearing, he appeared extremely distressed, emotionally drained, and under severe psychological pressure.
International human rights organizations had previously expressed serious concern about Ali Kerimli’s conditions of detention. According to Human Rights Watch, following his interviews with Western media, the authorities intensified their pressure—they restricted his phone calls, banned packages from his family, turned off his television, and limited his access to printed materials. Human rights activists have called for an end to the mistreatment and for the politician’s release.
