41-year-old U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned amid a protracted conflict with Secretary of Defense Pete Hagset. He is leaving his post after 18 months on the job, and the details of the disagreements between the two officials have not yet been disclosed.

This was reported by the BBC. The White House stated that Driscoll was “highly effective” in advancing U.S. President Donald Trump’s agenda and provided “outstanding leadership” during military operations.

The exact reasons for the disagreement between Driscoll and Hagseth remain unknown. At the same time, the Army secretary was a close friend of U.S. Army Chief of Staff Randy George, whom the Secretary of Defense reportedly asked to resign.

Driscoll’s departure marked yet another high-profile shakeup in the U.S. military leadership. Earlier, Secretary of the Navy John Felan had left his post, unexpectedly resigning in April.

Among other high-ranking military officials who have left their posts are Army Chief of Staff Randy George, Army General David Godn, and Major General William Green.

Since Hegset took office at the Pentagon, more than a dozen high-ranking military officers have been dismissed. Among them are the Chief of Naval Operations and the Deputy Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force.

What is Driscoll known for?

The Secretary of the Army is the highest-ranking civilian official in the U.S. Army. He is responsible for overseeing service members in the active-duty Army, the National Guard, and the Reserve.

Before joining the Trump administration, Driscoll served in the U.S. Army. In 2007, he was an officer; he later commanded a cavalry platoon and spent several months in Iraq in 2009.

In this role, he became known as Trump’s “drone minister” due to his active support for new technologies in warfare.

In 2025, he also played a prominent role in negotiations aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. Driscoll traveled abroad and met, in particular, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The former Army secretary is a close ally and friend of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, whom he met while attending Yale Law School.
