Merz Replaced "AdG" Leader Alice Weidel

The German chancellor engaged in a debate in the Bundestag.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz engaged in a heated debate in the Bundestag with the leader of “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) Alice Weidel, calling her party’s immigration policy effectively “ethnic cleansing” against skilled workers.

Weidel initially told lawmakers that the results of the election in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt—in which the “AdG” party (this political party opposes immigration—Ed.), demonstrated the “complete failure” of Merz’s coalition with center-left forces and that the chancellor’s time in power had allegedly come to an end.

Following this, the AfD leader demanded that cheap Russian gas be returned to the German market. In addition, she called for the restoration of the “Nord Stream” pipelines.

In response, Merz accused the AfD of harming Germany’s interests by supporting Russia. He also stated that the “remigration” policy supported by Weidel could negatively affect millions of people and, moreover, could have a detrimental impact on German industry, since many skilled workers are of foreign origin.

Merz pointed out to Weidel that the country would have to close all restaurants, hospitals, and nursing homes, since they are staffed exclusively by migrants.

As a reminder, in September 2026, in the elections in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt, the far-right party “AdG” won. It received nearly 44% of the vote. However, it is not yet clear whether it will be able to form a government in this federal state.
